MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF HOUSE HUNTING IN NIGERIA
House hunting in Nigeria is quite hectic.
I had my personal experience  in Abuja in 2009. I was looking for One Bedroom Flat as the need for relocation arose. The first means of securing an apartment that occurred to me was going through Estate Firms. By the time i contacted some estate firms to make inquires, i realized they were more interested in selling properties than renting. Few of them that rent houses, had exorbitant agency fees, also their rental flats was far more expensive  than my budget.

I decided to resort to road side agents. I was referred to Mark Louis Plaza Wuse II, Beside Valencia Hotel, Abuja. There were quite a lot of agents there. They don’t have offices so its all a game of gamble and you cant really trust road side agents, but i didn’t have any other option, so i decided to take a chance. After talking to few of them, i hired one agent to find me a house.

The guy i hired to find me a house requested for recharge card and fuel money and by the time he showed me up to 12 horrible houses, it was clear that those houses were clearly rejected and waiting for desperate occupants. He didn’t even have the keys to some of the houses so we had to wait for the real agent to appear before the viewing.

remember vividly one of the one bedroom flats in Jabi Area then, it was a beautiful house, but it was soo small that gas cylinder couldn’t even fit into the kitchen. It was also clear that the room was a self contained house, partitioned to forcefully become one bedroom flat.

Sincerely speaking, after one month waiting and viewing,  i was fed up with the agent and his money demanding habit without even delivering a house close to my expectation and my reasonable budget.

Finally, i got my house through word of mouth. My friend told me that someone was moving out of her area in 2 weeks. I went and saw the house and i was very satisfied. I met the care taker of the house and paid 2 weeks before the occupant moved out.

It was quite a risky and hectic experience as i had to leave my office to view those horrible houses and meet road side agents. They all had similar contacts and there was no need trying many of the agents. It was a big relief finally finding a home and i never want to experience such in my life again.
